Choose the Perfect cabinet hardware for your space
If you’re planning to remodel your kitchen or bath, you probably feel a little overwhelmed. So many styles, hardware, and designs to choose from. Ideally, we could have everything. However, that’s not always the case.
Cabinet & Company wants to help. We will help you decide what cabinet hardware makes the most sense so that every little detail is accounted for. We want to help you create that “WOW” feeling to friends when they stop by.
Types of Cabinet Hardware
You will need to decide if you prefer using all knobs, all pulls, or if you’d like to have both. Piece of advice – it is easier to open a cabinet with a knob and a drawer will a pull. However there is no golden rule to follow, and exceptions can be made. The best approach is to create a functional set up to align with how you will use the space.
Knobs – Smaller profiles, less expensive, and used for both drawers and cabinets. Easy to install!
Pulls – Larger than their knob cousins, and, depending on the style you choose, they can make a space pop. Easy to grip, comes in multiple sizes and tends to complement larger cabinets.
Select a Style
Once you decide on the appropriate knob & pull ratio, you want to pick a style that suits your vision.
Traditional – Ridges, curves, and textured hardware will be your best friend.
Modern – Clean lines, clean edges, with a sleek, minimal profile.
Choose a finish
Create contrast in your room by picking the right finish. Consider the colors of your cabinets, appliances, faucets, lighting, etc.
Warmer tone – Brass cabinetry adds vintage feels.
Cooler tone – If your space is more contemporary, darker cabinetry adds to the cool tone of the kitchen.
Mix Your Metals
If you prefer everything to match in your space, stick with one metal. Otherwise, explore different options. Use black metal lighting and brass hardware, or any combination in between. Make the space reflect you.
Size of Hardware
The size of your hardware depends on your cabinets. A good rule of thumb is a 1:3 pull-to-drawer ratio.
Small drawers – Tend to be 12 inches or smaller. These work best with a pull that is 3-4 inches long or knobs that are about 1 inch in diameter.
Medium drawers – Tend to be 12 to 30 inches long. These work best with a pull that is 4 to 8 inches long or knobs that are about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.
Large drawers – These drawers run 30 to 48 inches long. Best to use a pull that is longer than 8 inches, or knobs that are 1 inch in diameter or greater. Consider using two pulls or knobs for larger drawers.

Cabinet knobs should be installed on the stile opposite the hinges. Place them 2.5 to 3 inches from the corner of the door.
For upper cabinets, install knobs in the bottom corners. For lower cabinets, place them in the upper corners.

A good rule of thumb is the 1:3 pull-to-drawer ratio. They should not exceed 1/3 of the length of the cabinet door or width of a drawer.
